Paper tracing the development of the lesbian community in Cork from the mid 1970s to the end of the twentieth century. It focuses on the community's attempts to eke out a space for itself, attempting, at various stages and with varying degrees of success, to negotiate and share space with gay men, women's groups and other 'alternative' groupings. It highlights the range and diversity of activities organised by the community over the years, combining a commitment to political activism with a sense of fun and a consciousness of the need to create spaces for the celebration and enjoyment of lesbian culture and community. This paper was published in Lambda Nordica 9, no. 1-2 (1) 2003. A version of the paper was also published in the Irish Women's Studies Review Volume 9 2004.
