Description

A leaflet produced by Women & AIDS, a member of AIDS Action Alliance, and addressed P.O. Box 1884, Sherriff St., Dublin 1. Subheading reads "AIDS is a Woman's Health Issue". 4 pages, but numbering is disorganised (potentially due to order of scans).
First page is numbered 8. Opening statement notes that "the boundaries of 'high risk' and 'low risk' groups are becoming blurred" with the increasing availability of AIDS information. Highlights the importance for women to learn to protect themselves and to take responsibility for their bodies and their health. Includes a detailed list of service providers available in Ireland.
Second page is numbered 4 and 5. Discusses the risks of being infected by the HIV virus during rape or sexual assault, pregnancy and artificial insemination. Is a woman who lives in a household with or cares for someone who has AIDS at risk? Are hospital workers', medical, nursing and laboratory staff at risk? How can women with the HIV virus protect themselves and others?
Third and final page is numbered 6 and 7. Should women take the test? What about women who have already had the test? Discusses safer sex practices, categorised according to safe, less safe, possibly risky and risky.
Fourth page is numbered 2 and 3. What is AIDS? Why this leaflet? Dispels "the many myths" circulating about the question of AIDS in relation to women, such as the idea that AIDS is "a man's disease, particularly a gay man's disease". Addresses the dangerous lack of concern among women of all sexual orientations and the general public. Notes that "[m]uch of the official information provided about AIDS is inadequate and incomplete and is directed at supposed 'high risk' groups." How do women get the HIV virus? How we cannot get AIDS? What women could be at risk? Are lesbians at risk from AIDS? What about women who inject drugs? Cleaning the works (how to sterilise syringes).
