Description

Three newspaper clippings. First clipping is an article from Evening Echo, dated 11 February, 1992 and entitled "Pub condom sale planned". Discusses the planned installation of illegal condom machines in Cork City pubs and night clubs on Friday, 14 February, 1992 by 'Condom Sense!', a campaign for wider availability of condoms, organised by the Association for the Promotion of Sexual Health. Mentions the condemnation of the campaign by Family Solidarity and the threat of prosecution by Cork Gardai. Also mentions Family Solidarity PRO, Des McDonald's description of the campaign as "Condom Nonsense". (See item 787 for three newspaper clippings of articles written by Des McDonald).

Second clipping is an article by Irish Press, dated 13 February, 1992 and entitled "Pubs defy law on sale of condoms". Discusses the planned installation of illegal condom machines in "a number of Dublin, Galway and Cork pubs and night clubs from Valentine's Day onwards as part of a major new challenge to the country's contraceptive laws." Notes that "Condom Sense was set-up in December by members of AIDS Alliance groups from around the country, and its aims have received the support of medical specialists, including Dr Fiona Mulcahy and Dr Mary Henry."

Third clipping is an article from Galway Advertiser, dated 13 February, 1992, and entitled "Condom Protest". Mentions the installation of condom vending machines in Setanta, a Salthill nightclub - "the first such venue in Galway to sell condoms on its premises." Notes that Brendan Smith, owner of Setanta's nightclub, "was involved in introducing condoms to UCG [University College Galway] when he was Student Union President in 1981." Mentions that several Condom Sense members in Galway are involved in Cairde, the support group for people affected by HIV/AIDS. States that condoms not only help prevent the spread of the HIV virus, but "[c]ondoms can also help prevent other diseases like pelvic inflammation and cervical cancer in women." Also mentions the lobbying by Condom Sense members of local representatives to push for wider availability of condoms.
