A photograph of LGBTQ+ activist and Cork LGBT Archive founder Orla Egan, Nico Coveney and JL Egan Morley, a Cork LGBT Archive volunteer, at the Brianna Ghey Vigil in Cork City on the 19th of Februaury 2023. Brianna Ghey was a 16 year old trans girl who was murdered on the 11th of February 2023 in Culcheth Linear Park in England. The vigil was organised by Trans+ Pride Cork and was held in Daunt Square.

Kieran Rose is a Cork gay activist who was born in 1953.
He began his activism as a founding member of the Cork Gay Collective and then later the Quay Coop. He campaigned for the rights of lesbian and gay workers resulting in the ICTU policy document of 1987 "Lesbian and Gay Rights in the Workplace".
He was a co-founder of GLEN in 1989 which went on to campaign successfully for gay law reform. He has also written "Diverse Communities: The Evolution of Lesbian and Gay Politics in Ireland". He has put together an incredible collection of photographs from the 1970s onwards.
We are grateful to Kieran Rose for sharing his photographs with the Cork LGBT Archive, and to Queer Culture Ireland for digitising and sharing some of the photographs.

A photograph of Cathal Kerrigan and Máirtín at the Gay Sweatshop Cork party in Trina Ni Ciardha and Frank's [surname unknown] flat, after the party in Hills Bar after the play, in 1980. Trina Ni Ciardha was the daughter of Prof. Tadgh O'Ciardha, President of UCC 1978-1988).
Gay Sweatshop was formed in London in 1975 and had its roots in the lunchtime theatre club "Ambience" held at the Almost Free theatre. In 1980 the london-based gay theatre group performed their play "Blood Green" in the Granary Theatre in Cork. This was one of the first events organised by the newly formed Cork Gay Collective.

In 1998 a group of Cork LGBT people competed in Amsterdam, and in 2002 in Sydney a number of Cork LGBT swimmers competed, bringing back gold medals to Cork.
Team Cork attended the Gay Games in 2010 in Cologne, Germany.
In 2018 Team Cork, a group of approximately 40 athletes took take part in the Gay Games in Paris August 2018. They had athletes from Badminton, Running, Soccer, Swimming, Urban Dance and Boxing. They returned with a great collection of medals.

In 2018 Team Cork, a group of approximately 40 athletes took take part in the Gay Games in Paris August 2018. They had athletes from Badminton, Running, Soccer, Swimming, Urban Dance and Boxing. They returned with a great collection of medals.

Cork LGBT people have won medals at the Gay Games since 1982, when the Gay Games started in San Francisco. The Gay Games is a quadrennial athletic event that brings together international LGBT athletes to compete in a range of sports.
In 1982 Cork gay man Oliver Murphy won a gold medal in the decathlon, and did it again in 1986. Cork lesbian Niamh Walsh competed in the Gay Games in Vancouver (1990), New York (1994) and Amsterdam (1998). She won gold in the 200 and 400m. .
In 1998 a group of Cork LGBT people competed in Amsterdam, and in 2002 in Sydney a number of Cork LGBT swimmers competed, bringing back gold medals to Cork.
Team Cork attended the Gay Games in 2010 in Cologne, Germany.

A photo of the opening ceremonies at the Gay Games in New York in 1994. Coinciding with the Stonewall 25 celebration, participants included Olympians, celebrities, politicians, and 12,500 artists & athletes from 40 countries. With 31 sports, Gay Games 1994 exceeded the Olympics in numbers of participants, and saw its first academic conference. From Ireland, Niamh Walsh, Pat O'Halloran, Josephine, Joseph O'D, Marian Urwin, and John Gayney competed. Niamh medalled in the 200 m, 400 m and relays.
