Matt Kennedy is a trans man from Cork. He is a trans activist, writer, boxer and researcher.
Matt was born in Cork in 1996.
In 2015-2016 Matt was Chairperson of the UCC (University College Cork) LGBTI+ Society and was the UCC Students Union LGBTI+ Rights Officer. His dissertation was on the development of activist traditions in Ireland in relation to reproductive justice and AIDS. He received the UCC Societies Achievement Award' for LGBTI+ activism in 2016.
Matt spoke at the 2017 March for Choice in Dublin sharing his Poem ‘Ireland is an Empty House’ which was publish in the 2018 book entitled Autonomy edited by Kathy D’arcy. His poetry was also published in Fruit Journal (2021), Poems From Home (2020), Not Butchers (2018), Queer Rage (2018), You changed me for the better (2017) BOYS DON’T CRY (2017) and G.A.A (2017).
Matt works with BeLonG To LGBTI+ youth service as Policy and Research Officer as well as completing his PhD on transnormativity and young trans men’s everyday lifeworlds. Matt has conducted several large scale research projects namely the first LGBTI+ School Climate Report (2019) in collaboration with Columbia University and the LGBTI+ Life in Lockdown Research Reports (2021& 2020).
He is the author of the Irish University Review journal article entitled ‘Some Things are Worth Losing to Become./? Trans Masculinity | Queer Autoethnography | Where Theory and the Body Collide’ (2020).
Matt has been involved in several community based groups throughout his life namely Queer Action Ireland, QÉIRE & TranSports. Thus far, Matt has dedicated his adult life to the liberation of trans people through community organising, writing, activism, campaigning and research and he intends to spend the rest of his life doing so.
