Stephen Doyle he/him they/them
Stephen Doyle is a Cork Queer Artist.
They were born in Cork in 1994.
Their work explores issues of queer identity through the relationship between figuration and the politics of representation. Doyle makes portraits of LGBTQIA+ people, and often includes objects in the paintings, a gesture of ‘othering’ the art that mirrors the subject matter it investigates.
They are a graduate of Crawford College of Art and Design (2017).
They are the recipient of two International Art Prizes 'Ashurst Emerging Artist Prize' and 'Sunny Art Prize'.
Their portrait Dylan is Ainm Dom was shortlisted for the Zurich Portrait Prize. This portrait was acquired by Crawford Art Gallery in Cork, making it the first piece in the National Collection to discuss transgender/queer identity. In 2021 another of Stephen's portraits, Meditating Tongqui, was added to the National Collection.
They have had 5 solo exhibitions in Cork, Dublin, London.
Further to this they have exhibited at Harmony Art Gallery in Shanghai, VUE National Contemporary Art Fair in the RHA (2018/19). Royal Ulster Academy Annual Exhibition (2019/20), just to name a few.
In 2020 they were granted the Visual Art Bursary Award by the Arts Council of Ireland.
