Description

Newspaper clipping of front-page headline article from City Tribune, Galway by Bernie Ni Fhlatharta, dated 14 February, 1992 and entitled "Nightclub boss ready face jail over condoms". Banner headline reads, "Showdown looms over illegal vending machine". Discusses Galway nightclub proprietor, Brendan Smith, of the Setanta (formerly the Oslo Hotel) in Salthill, Galway. States "he is prepared to face prosecution in a bid to make condoms more freely available in the city by installing condom vending machines in the premises." Mentions that "he [Smith] was critical of other nightclub owners in the city for not supporting Condom Sense campaign being launched in Dublin, Cork and Galway today [14 February, 1992]." Notes that Smith was contacted by the Association for Promotion of Sexual Health Ltd, organisers of the Condom Sense campaign and agreed to have the vending machines installed. References Dr Angela Savage, a lecturer in Chemistry in UCG [University College Galway] and one of the organisers of the Condom Sense campaign who said, "following the appointment of Dr John O'Connell as Minister for Health she was optimistic that the legislation would at last be changed." Mentions "AIDS Help West, an umbrella group for all the organisations involved in the AIDS campaign in the West". Notes the need to extend service hours due to an increase in number of calls to the Helpline in the past year.
