Description

Irish Family Planning Association Bulletin, dated October 1991. Front cover heading reads "Politicians Can Seriously Damage Your Health. or (What A Politician Should Know Before Voting On The Condom Bill)". Contents: Expert Opinion; Will the Bill Work; The Facts About Condoms; The Condom Controversy. Bulletin published by: Information & Education Department (IFPA) 36/37 Lr. Ormond Quay, Dublin. States that Irish Family Planning Association was established 1969.
Second page is "From the Editors Desk", a piece entitled "A Matter of Life and Death" by Jon O'Brien, Manager of Information and Education. Discusses "proposed condom bill" that will determine condom accessibility. Second piece is entitled "Condoms? Ask the Experts" by Dick Ahlstrom, from the Irish Times, dated 13 March 1991. Provides 5 facts about condoms.
Third page is an article by Catherine Forde B.L., Co-Chairperson of IFPA entitled "Will The Condom Bill Work?" Mentions about "the conviction of the IFPA for the unlawful sale of a condom and the resulting public outcry". References Charles Haughey's description of the law on condoms as "very outdated and unsatisfactory". Asks if the bill proposed by Dr Rory O'Hanlon, Minister for Health "improves the present situation" and "if the bill as published will in fact work?"
Continued on fourth page. Discusses the ban on automatic distribution and how it is essential to "ensure anonymity". Also discusses the age factor: "The proposed age under the condom bill is 17 years." IFPA seriously questions "the feasibility of the new arrangements which are unnecessarily complicated, restrictive and unworkable." Contends that "the new law will in even a short period generate a plethora of court cases similar to that of the IFPA in the Virgin Megastore."
Fifth page is entitled "Plain Facts in the Condom Debate". Subheading reads, "Condoms Reduce Disease - The International Experience".
Continued on sixth and seventh page. Lists 20 facts, in total, acquired from multiple different sources, as referenced.
Eight page is entitled "The Condom Controversy" by Jon O'Brien, Manager of Information and Education, IFPA. Continued on ninth and tenth pages.
Eleventh page is entitled "Six Decades of Political Procrastination". Concludes on twelfth page. Chronology covers from 1935 to 1991.
