Description
Newspaper article from page 13 of Irish Times, dated 6 February, 1992 and entitled "Putting condoms were they count". Banner headline reads, "Next week on St Valentine's Day, a newly formed group will install condom vending machines in pubs and clubs in Dublin, Cork and Galway. Harry Browne reports on the "Condom Sense" campaign". Pull quote reads, "Sex is a minefield, with unwanted pregnancy, sexually-transmitted diseases, HIV. In Ireland we continue to hope against hope that young people are not going to step on any of those mines."
References Mary O'Rourke (Minister for Health) who declared "her personal opposition to the almost forgotten bill which would turn decisions about condoms' availability over to the regional health boards (that Bill would also lower the age limit for purchasing condoms from 18 to 17)." Notes Arthur Leahy, a founder member of Cork AIDS Alliance, "came up with the idea of behind Condom Sense - a direct-action approach to putting condoms on the political and media agenda."
Also references Dr Angela Savage (Lecturer in Chemistry, UCG), Clare Watson and Rachel Martin ('Condom Sense' campaign organisers), Dr Peter Smith (lecturer in Microbiology, UCG), and Tom Cooney (Irish Council for Civil Liberties). Notes that Clare Watson and Rachel Martin worked on the "Stories from the Silence" documentary about AIDS and last year's Irish tour of the AIDS "Names Quilt".
