Description

LGBT telephone helplines provided a crucial source of support and information for people who are coming out and trying to access the LGBT community. In Cork Tel-A-Friend telephone helpline was established by the Cork Branch of the IGRM (Irish Gay Rights Movement) in 1977. In 1985 the Cork Lesbian Line and Gay Information Cork telephone helplines began operating. These helplines encountered difficulties advertising their services, with local newspapers refusing to print their adverts. Despite these difficulties the helplines continued to operate providing an important service for the community.
