Description
Image of Dr. James Barry. Dr. Barry is believed to have been born on Merchant's Quay in Cork in 1789. He was a military surgeon and is believed to have performed the first successful caesarean section, in which both the mother and child survived. On his death, and against his express wishes, his body was examined and found to have been female at birth.
