Description
The back room of Loafer's Bar in Cork.
Loafers was opened in 1983 by Derrick Gerety and operated until 2015, making it one of the longest running LGBT bars in Ireland. After Derrick the bar was managed by Rena Blake and then by Ted O'Connell.
Loafers provided an important meeting space for the Cork LGBT community and social activists.
The Back Room was particularly significant for Cork Lesbians. Thursday nights were women only in the back bar and Cork lesbian and bisexual women would socialise there, creating an important space for the community.
