A 2 page newspaper article from The Sunday Tribune, Vol. 9 No. 3, dated 15 January 1989, entitled "A Lot of People Know Very Little About AIDS" and subtitled, "Lorna Donlon talks to Joan Cronin about the need for more State resources to cope with the growing number of AIDS suffers." Notes that Cronin was "the first full time AIDS counsellor in this country." Mentions how Cronin had to contact the Terence Higgins Trust in London to obtain information about AIDS. First page discusses the lack of "a comprehensive, planned approach in Ireland to AIDS", how the Department of Health "continue to side step the issue" and "failed to introduce any effective preventative campaign as a result of the deep-seated conservatism of some officials", and the absence of "a comprehensive public education programme". Cronin states: "The average drug user is probably better informed about the AIDS virus than the average member of the public." Acknowledges the work of the Anna Liffey Project in supporting drug users, and the AIDS Action Alliance and Gay Health Action Group for "still providing most of the available information on AIDS." Second page discusses syringe exchange programmes in the prevention of HIV infection.
