Description
Newspaper article by Kevin Dawson entitled "'Condom Sense' campaigners set for jail". States that "[t]he organisers of the St Valentine's Day campaign to legalise condom vending machines are prepared to go to jail for acts of civil disobedience, according to the regional campaign head in Galway. Reference Dr Angela Savage, a lecturer at University College Galway, who said that "the 'Condom Sense!' campaign was intended to provoke legislative change rather than prosecutions." Notes that "Under Section 14 of the 1979 Family Planning Act, as amended in 1985, illegal sale of contraceptives may be punished by a fine of up to £500 or a jail sentence of up to six months, or both." Also notes the concerns about the availability of condoms in rural areas. Dr Savage said: "Condoms cannot be bought on the Aran Islands, for example - and don't tell me there is no sex on Aran." Lists organisations backing the campaign, such as the Union of Students in Ireland.
