James Barry Merchant's Quay Cork
Transgender surgeon Dr. James Barry is believed to have been born above his father's shop on Merchant's Quay Cork around 1789.
James Barry was a military surgeon. He is believed to be the first person to successfully perform a Caesarean section where both mother and baby survived.
Dr. Barry died in 1865. He has explicitly requested that he be burried in the clothes he died in. However this wish was not respected and it was revealed that he had been born a woman.
